Senior Software Developer

About the role

We are looking for a senior software developer who is comfortable owning features from a product idea through deployment and support. You will work across a mature SaaS application, make careful improvements to existing systems, and help shape the technical choices behind new product capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, review, and maintain customer-facing features across the Fyrebox application.
• Develop Node.js and Express services, routes, integrations, and background jobs using modern JavaScript and ES modules.
• Work across Pug templates, Vue 3 interfaces, Bootstrap, and Sass to deliver accessible, responsive experiences.
• Model and query application data in MongoDB with Mongoose, with attention to reliability and performance.
• Maintain integrations with payment, email, ecommerce, CRM, analytics, AI, and infrastructure providers.
• Investigate production issues, improve security and observability, and write focused tests for high-risk behavior.
• Document decisions and communicate clearly with a small remote team.

Requirements

• At least five years of professional web development experience, including substantial production experience with JavaScript and Node.js.
• Strong knowledge of Express or a comparable server-side web framework and the HTTP fundamentals behind it.
• Experience designing MongoDB data models and diagnosing query, consistency, and performance problems.
• Ability to work confidently with HTML, CSS, responsive layouts, and browser-side JavaScript.
• Experience with automated testing, Git-based review, production debugging, and incremental delivery in an established codebase.
• Sound judgment about security, privacy, maintainability, and the trade-offs involved in shipping SaaS products.
• Clear written and spoken English and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
• A relevant degree or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with Vue 3, Pug, Bootstrap, or Sass.
• Experience with AWS, Cloudflare, Railway, Stripe, or third-party OAuth and webhook integrations.
• Experience integrating generative AI services or building data-heavy product features.
• Experience improving a long-lived SaaS application without disrupting existing customers.

Working arrangements

Full-time. Remote within Australia. 38 hours per week, with flexible working hours and reasonable overlap with Melbourne business hours.
