Data Scientist

Turn product, quiz, and customer data into trustworthy insights, experiments, and intelligent features that improve the Fyrebox experience.

About the role

We are looking for a product-minded data scientist who can move from an ambiguous question to a reliable analysis or production-ready model. You will help us understand how people create and use quizzes, measure what improves their results, and develop data-informed product capabilities while respecting customer privacy.

Responsibilities

  • Define meaningful product, acquisition, engagement, and retention metrics with clear assumptions and limitations.
  • Analyze quiz creation, participation, conversion, and customer lifecycle data to identify opportunities and explain product behavior.
  • Design and evaluate experiments, including power, success criteria, guardrail metrics, and post-launch analysis.
  • Build reproducible data pipelines, datasets, and quality checks for analysis and modeling.
  • Develop and evaluate models for recommendations, classification, forecasting, anomaly detection, or other useful product capabilities.
  • Partner with engineering and marketing to turn findings into practical product and growth decisions.
  • Communicate methods, uncertainty, privacy considerations, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues.

Requirements

  • At least three years of professional experience in data science, product analytics, applied statistics, or a closely related role.
  • Strong SQL and Python skills, including experience producing reproducible analyses and maintainable data workflows.
  • A solid foundation in statistics, experimental design, causal reasoning, and model evaluation.
  • Experience working with event, behavioral, or SaaS product data and translating business questions into measurable hypotheses.
  • Ability to inspect data quality, recognize bias and leakage, and explain uncertainty without overstating conclusions.
  • Experience presenting findings through clear writing, visualizations, and concise recommendations.
  • Clear written and spoken English and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • A degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, economics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

  • Experience with recommendation systems, natural language processing, or generative AI evaluation.
  • Experience with MongoDB, product event data, subscription businesses, or self-serve SaaS funnels.
  • Experience deploying models or collaborating closely with software engineers on production data products.
  • Familiarity with privacy-aware analytics and responsible use of customer-generated content.

Working arrangements

Full-time. Remote within Australia. 38 hours per week, with flexible working hours and reasonable overlap with Melbourne business hours.
